  • Primary Responsibilities


    • Technical Knowledge: Very good understanding of firearms products and/or ammunition processes and related advanced engineering designs/function.  Capable of creating 'white paper' designs. Go To person for technical specialty. Good understanding of company structures and required business processes.   Design specialist in several disciplines. Understands some advanced principles. Capable of advanced design modification with minimal supervision. Capable of identifying appropriate analyses and tests required to arrive at fact based decisions.  Beginning to develop understanding of specific manufacturing processes unique to ROC and their implication on design and cost in at least one VSO area.
    • Tool Usage: Comfortable with and able to use advanced tools, including Design of Experiments and CAE (Finite Element Analysis, Simulation) to meet objectives - anticipate and/or identify interactions.  Able to critically assess results and challenge analyses. Proficient in creating DFMEAs and VA-VE activities
    • Indicators: Fully proficient in design and validation methods.  May have advanced statistical methods training (i.e. green belt).  Comfortable being responsible for driving program technical direction and being accountable for results.  Materials selection of new parts. Can apply lean principles to development. Reviews and recommends potential mfg. processes and associated tool materials selection
    • Scope of Responsibility: Typical role as the technical lead on a Level A program (Major P&L project). Formulates tasks to validate root cause of defects and design enhancements using statistical methods. Task timelines defined by major elements of the program plan.  Errors can cause major program delays and danger of missing key commitments in overall product delivery plan. May have significant resource and cost impact. Project objectives provided and agreed with technical lead. Progress tracked weekly and monthly by program manager or tech lead. Capable of defining activities, tests, lab work required to complete design tasks.
    • Leadership: Has strong work ethic, respects time of others, prompt role model for safe working conditions and maintains a clean workplace. Able to hold teammates and co-workers accountable for results thorough leadership and process diligence- supports and trains younger engineers in best practices. Never a spectator or victim- makes things happen.
    • Communication and Collaboration: Capable of generating standard reports and documents supporting design validation and/or design changes.  Capable of communicating design philosophy and requirements to team. Able to hold clear and concise design reviews.  Capable of preparing concise design status reports for leadership. Able to communicate complex technical considerations to non-technical employees and other functions.
    • Behaviors: Completes tasks on time with high quality. Works well with peers and team members. Extremely dependable in delivering what is promised. Displays a bias for action and performance in the work area. Solid representative and advocate of ROC’s behaviors; mentors team members and provides technical support when needed.


    Level of Review: Work results are reviewed by program management for schedule and technical quality by Tech lead.


    Level of Review: May have little day-to-day supervision. Tasks are reviewed daily or at project milestones as needed by engineering/manufacturing.


    Skills and Education Required

    BS/MSc  degree in Engineering or Science (i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials engineering, Physics) from a four year accredited or nationally recognized college or university and 4 - 10 years relevant experience; PhD with 3 – 5 yrs experience;  Firearms and ammunition experience a plus.



    Ability to read work and interpret instructions in English.  Ability to record observations and keep records of data as instructed.



    Ability to perform advanced mathematical operations such as exponents, logarithms and apply those methods to analyses involving frequency distributions, reliability, analysis of variance and factor analysis.



    Proficiency with CAD/CAM, finite element analysis, mechanical simulation or aptitude for learning.  Proficient with Microsoft Office suite necessary. Program management skills a plus.

    Prefer high level experience using Ansys FEA tools (Mechanical, STR, Fluent, AutoDyn), and MSC/ADAMS.
