  • Position Summary

    Supervise and oversee all Quality and Receiving related activities and personnel at the plant. Work with the team to establishing and maintain a Quality Management System (QMS), and a Team that jointly promotes customer satisfaction and positively impacts the financial performance of the business.

    Primary Responsibilities


    • Serves as the primary quality control resource for problem identification, resolution, reporting, and continuous improvement.


    • Responsible for the quality and receiving departments and personnel. Including development of the team through effective leadership programs such as: “one-on-ones”, training plans, performance feedback, and coaching.


    • Establishes and implements metrics (process performance/capability, control charts, measurement quality) for monitoring system effectiveness and to enable managers to make sound product quality decisions.


    • Perform root-cause analysis using quality tools (e.g.: Ishikawa Diagram, Pareto Chart, Process Flow Chart, etc.) to identify effective corrective actions for both product and process improvements.


    • Establishes collection and analysis system of statistical data to predict trends that will affect improvement of product quality.


    • Initiates and implements quality improvement activities as appropriate (e.g.: Kaizen, Six Sigma) to raise the performance of the company’s values streams.


    • Supports engineering activities by participating in design development projects representing quality assurance and the customer.


    • Designs, implements, and documents procedures for process control, process improvement, testing, and inspection.


    • Monitors vendor performance and establishes criteria with rating system for critical vendors.
    • Reviews customer contracts and change requests to ensure the necessary criteria and provisions are included in quality and process plans.


    • Interacts with customers to identify opportunities to improve quality and establish feedback with manufacturing and development personnel.


    • Oversees calibration and testing initiatives.


    • Participates and oversees internal quality audit initiatives.


    • Reports to management on quality issues, trends, and losses.


    • Responsible for promoting the Quality Program within Barnes; lead the development of and setting quality goals and metrics for the site annually and monitoring progress for bi-weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to Remington Outdoor Company Corporate Quality.


    • Responsible for the Document Control System within Barnes; including Document Control Board (DCB) meetings and responsibility of managing all control documents.


    • Attend corporate Quality meetings to report 1) Quality status and progress to goals, 2) actions to detect, prevent, and recover from product and process deficiencies, 3) training and education of employees, 4) plans and schedules for introducing new and updated products into the market.


    • Update the current Quality Management System to meet “ISO” certification requirements.


    • Responsible for development and execution of departmental succession planning strategies.


    • Maintains and expands professional and technical knowledge by: attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies – as examples.


    • Shift work and extra hours may be required on an as needed or permanent basis


    • Travel may be required to attend such events as customer meetings, trainings, trade shows, etc

    Skills and Education Required

    • Bachelor’s degree in a Mechanical, Quality or related technical field or equivalent Q.A. work related experience with a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a quality engineer and/or quality manager.


    • Understanding and knowledge of natural variation and the application of statistical process control (SPC)


    • Knowledge and experience in shooting and reloading industry or hobby helpful


    • Good balance of authority and diplomacy along with a firm and assertive personality


    • Positive, teachable attitude (Must be trained in all aspects of our company)


    • Personal drive and ambition to initiate and complete projects
    • Strong interpersonal skills, including motivating others, conflict resolution, and influencing without authority.


    • Patient to allow time for changes to take effect


    • Possess effective oral and written communication skills


    • Attention to detail/follow up


    • Comfortable working in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment


    • Good problem-solving skills


    • Must have good advanced mathematical skills and be proficient with computer programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
    • Experience with Minitab, JMP, or other statistical software packages is highly desirable


    • Personal Tool Requirements: (Including but not limited to) 0-1” micrometer (.0001 increments), 0-8” calipers (.001 increments), .0001 indicator
    • Ability to speak, read and write in the English language sufficient enough to perform the following:

    >Communicate effectively with other team members and supervision

    >Read and comprehend process instructions

    >Record pertinent process information as required

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather and underground contained conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but is often loud in specified areas. Hearing and eye protection is provided.  
    • Safety Shoes meeting OSHA/ANSI Z-41 specifications are required for anyone working in the production department. Anyone working on the ammunition loading equipment or working in the Ballistic Lab are also required to have electrostatic dissipative (ESD) shoes.

    • Hearing and listening habits to determine abnormal machines noises


    • Visual skills to determine bullet defects and flaws


    • Good hygiene and grooming habits, long hair must be pulled back, no loose clothing or exposed midriffs, and no shorts.


    • Position requires physical stamina and strength due to walking long distances several times a day,   other physical movement, including bending, lifting 50+ pounds and climbing.
