  • Position Summary

    General Summary:

     

    Manage environmental affairs to see that the plant remains in compliance with State and Federal environmental regulations.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Principal Duties and Accountabilities (*Essential Functions):

    • Oversee and coordinate hazardous waste management practices including waste sampling and characterization, storage, disposal, shipping, recordkeeping and reporting to regulatory agencies.
    • Conduct training for employees on handling the hazardous waste of the plant’s treated wastewater discharge, submit reports to regulatory agencies and work with plant personnel on the operation of the treatment plant to maintain compliance.
    • Maintain all required environmental record.
    • Prepare and submit to regulatory agencies all environmental reports such as the annual hazardous waste report, title all chemical inventory and emissions reports and monthly discharge monitoring reports.
    • Develop estimates, obtain authorization and manage environmentally related capital projects.
    • Prepare permit applications or work with consultants on the preparation of permit applications.
    • Keep current with changes in environmental regulations, interpret those changes that apply to plant operations and make the necessary changes to the plant's environmental programs to maintain compliance.
    • Develop and implement measures in the plant that minimize waste generation, conserve water and reduce air emissions.
    • Work with consultants, attorneys and contractors on a wide range of environmental issues that affect the plant.
    • Chairman of the plant's Wildlife Committee.

    Skills and Education Required

    Educational Skills and Experience:

     

    • Fifth year college or university program certificate; or two (2) to four (4) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
    • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.
    • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
    • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or board of directors.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
    • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
    • Must be a registered environmental professional
    • Ability to interpret a wide range of environmental regulations and apply them to an industrial site
    • Good writing and oral communication skills.
    • Minimum of two (2) years experience in managing environmental compliance for an industrial firm or working for a state or federal environmental regulatory agency.
